Meet Senator J. D. “Danny” Diggs

Sheriff J. D. "Danny" Diggs

Sheriff

A lifelong Virginian and strong supporter of law enforcement, Senator J. D. "Danny" Diggs has dedicated his career to helping those on the Peninsula. After starting as a Poquoson Police dispatcher when he was just 19 years old, Senator Diggs worked his way up the ranks — from corrections officer to uniformed police officer to investigator — all while earning a degree in Police Science and starting a family. He is proud to have been the Sheriff for York County and the City of Poquoson, a role he has executed faithfully for more than twenty years. With more than 45 years as a law enforcement officer, his service has been recognized and awarded by organizations across the commonwealth and country, including the York County Business Association, VA Association of School Resource Officers, Southern Christian Leadership Conference and Exchange Club of York, who named him Police Officer of the Year in 2001.

Leader

Leader

Senator Diggs knows what it means to fight for his values and stand up for what’s right. A lot has changed in Virginia during his 45 years of service to his community and Senator Diggs has never given up in his fight to make his community the best place in the country to live, work and raise a family. His career in public safety and time spent at the National Sheriffs’ Institute and the FBI National Academy at Quantico prepared him to lead his family, department, and community.  Now he’s ready to continue his mission in the State Senate. A proud husband, father and grandfather of five, Senator Diggs believes it’s his responsibility to leave his community, commonwealth and country in a better place than he found it — he’ll never give up his fight to secure a safer, more prosperous future for all.

Conservative

Virginia needs commonsense conservative leadership to solve the tough challenges we all face today. As Sheriff, his conservative ideals have guided his service and helped create safer communities for the people he serves. During his 23 years of service as Sheriff, York County’s population has grown by 20%, but the crime rate has fallen 25%. Senator Diggs strove to create a department that values people from all backgrounds because he knows true leaders bring people together to find the best solutions to the toughest problems. Senator Diggs is ready to take that commonsense, conservative approach and commitment to public service to Richmond to deliver results for the people of the 24th district.
In the Senate, Danny will continue his record of service and safety by passing legislation to give police the tools they need to keep our community safe and to put violent criminals behind bars.  Danny will also support cutting the gas tax, repealing the grocery tax, lowering the cost of healthcare, and passing transportation solutions for the Peninsula.  He will also support legislation that expands job creation and opportunities to help folks get ahead in their lives.
